Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Trophy in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been won on hard surfaces
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev won his maiden championship for nearly 30 months with success over opponent Moutet in the competition final.
The athlete, a former number one, has had a torrid season, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the American major.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and ultimately parting ways with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Moutet.
It is the player's maiden title following the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hardcourt after that period of the previous year.
Success also indicates the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"For the first time I am participating in a tournament with my children together, so to win a title is particularly special," stated tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in honour of my child Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my child Alisa was born was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, including in Halle earlier this year.
His defensive play style and frequent reactions on the playing surface had prompted commentators to question if his capacity to play at the highest level was concluded.
But the player has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an improved serve.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the challenging Moutet, securing four of the concluding five games to gain the advantage.
Both players swapped service breaks in the second set before the challenger, striving for his maiden tour championship, seized the initiative to force a decider.
Moutet saved 4 early-game chances in a close deciding set before Medvedev won the break to that score to serve for the match.
Suitably, he earned the title with a shot at the front of the court, with Moutet incapable to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
