A man who laced candy with sedative and provided them to youngsters at a summer camp in the region has admitted sexual crimes against two boys both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and a grown-up fell ill at the facility in July.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a young boy.

The defendant was kept in jail before a additional proceeding on late November.

'Treat game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer program which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the boys "for many years", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the next day.

She stated the man had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "Recently" his stepchild had concerns about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to have a look in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC explained objects including baby oil, ointment and syringes were found, and his stepson notified the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She said the defendant proceeded to play the "candy game" with six youngsters that evening - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"The police had not responded by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the incident.

The prosecutor explained the minors were having difficulty walking due to their condition, so the family member notified the authorities once more.

She stated the defendant then played the "candy game" in a area of five minors.
