EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
