Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
