At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
